DEERFIELD – Gun violence took the life of a longtime Deerfield resident Saturday night when Meaghan Burns was shot to death at a 7-Eleven in Portsmouth, Virginia, where she was stationed as a sailor in the U.S. Navy.
Burns, 23, was one of three active-duty Navy corpsmen killed in what police are calling a double homicide and suicide.
According to her obituary, Burns was born on Aug. 25, 1995 in Springfield. Her family moved to South Deerfield in 2004. She graduated from Frontier Regional High School in 2013 and enlisted in the Navy in 2015.
