Caroline Matheson went 3-for-5 with a pair of extra-base hits and four RBIs to power the South Hadley softball team to a 14-10 win over Commerce, Thursday at home.
Matheson doubled and tripled in the Tigers’ first win of the season.
Four other hitters drove in two runs for South Hadley (1-9) — Molly Goshea, Belle McCallum, Vanessa Plamondon and Karlee Zuhusky. Goshea also recorded three hits and scored three runs while Sarah Bisson scored four times while drawing three walks and going 2-for-2.
Christine Gurek allowed just one hit and one run after coming on in relief in the fourth inning. She struck out three and walked four in her 3⅔ innings of work to earn the victory.
West Springfield 3, Northampton 2 (8) — Emilia Pelis’ two-run double in the fifth gave the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead, but the Terriers rallied for the win.
Jill McGrath (run) was 3-for-4, while Katelyn Ramdath (run) was 2-for-4. Marissa Badorini added two hits. She also struck out seven and walked four in defeat.
Smith Academy Putnam 2 — Amanda Novak had three hits and scored twice, while Bailey McCoy and Abby Pederson each had two hits and two runs as the Falcons (6-4, 2-3 Bi-County West) cruised in Hatfield.
Cecilia LaFlamme had two hits.
Palmer 16, Belchertown 15 — The Orioles’ seventh-inning rally ended a run short in a non-league matchup at Palmer.
Allison Cote was 3-for-5 with four RBIs for Belchertown (5-6) while Gina Camerota added three hits and three RBIs. Emma LeBlanc and Delaney O’Brien both scored three times for the Orioles, who scored seven unearned runs on five Palmer errors.
Hampshire Regional 25, Longmeadow 0 (5) — The Raiders stayed patient and drew 18 walks to go along with their 10 hits in the blowout at home.
Brooke Kavanaugh (four RBIs, two runs, hit) worked three of those walks for Hampshire (9-2). Katelyn Baker was 2-for-4 with five runs scored and three RBIs, and Jocelyn Mettey added four runs scored and three RBIs on a 3-for-4 day.
Emily Halket scattered two runs and four strikeouts while walking none in her complete game to boost her record to 4-1.
Hopkins Academy 3, Greenfield 2 (8) — Jack Feltovic broke from third on a Matt Hanscom grounder to short with one out in the eighth. The throw home was up the line and following a slight collision with the catcher, who couldn’t field the ball, Hanscom scored the winning run for the Golden Hawks (8-5).
Feltovic walked to open the inning and moved to second on a Noah Scanlon-Dean single. The runners moved over on a wild pitch.
Hopkins scored twice in the sixth to tie the game.
Feltovic and Scanlon-Dean had back-to-back walks. A Liam Higgins fielder’s choice put runners at first and second. Following a flyout, a grounder to shortstop was misplayed, allowing one run to score and runners to move in scoring position. A wild pitch to Thea Hanscom scored the tying run.
Feltovic struck out nine and walked two over eight innings for the win. He struck out the side in the seventh.
Easthampton 5, Athol 3 — Matthew Arroyo (two walks) and Cody Thibodeau (two walks) each scored twice, while Nick Jolicoeur (RBI) and Ohm Patel had one hit apiece for the Eagles (7-4, 5-0 Hampshire East).
Nick Lloyd had a pair of RBIs.
Jolicoeur struck out six, walked three and allowed four hits over four innings for the win. Nathan Morse fanned four and walked one with two hits over two innings for the save.
Hampshire Regional 8, Granby 6 — The Raiders (5-7, 5-3 Bi-County) jumped out to an 8-0 lead and beat the host Rams (7-5, 4-4) for the second time in as many nights.
Bennett Kelly (two RBIs, run), Jake Constantine (two RBIs, run) and Nick Pellegrini each had two hits.
Matt Quenneville’s two-run single in the fourth inning made it 7-0.
Carter Matthews (two runs, double) was 3-for-4, while Ryan Gaughen (two runs, RBI, double) was 2-for-4 for Granby.
South Hadley 16, Turners Falls 0 — The bottom of the order combined to go 4-for-12 with nine RBIs and seven walks as the Tigers (3-7) rolled on the road.
No. 6 hitter Max Garvin (two runs) had a hit and three RBIs. No. 7 hitter Grady Provost (two runs) had two hits, two walks and two RBIs. No. 8 hitter Sean Sears had two RBIs and three walks and No. 9 hitter Mike Mazza (hit, run) added two RBIs and a walk.
Aidan Sullivan had two hits, two runs and an RBI in the leadoff spot.
Boys volleyball
Chicopee 3, Belchertown 2 — The Orioles (1-14) led 2-0, but the Pacers rallied for the 21-25, 19-25, 25-13, 25-14, 15-13 victory.
Lucas Czarniecki had 20 assists for Belchertown. Nathan Courchesne finished with nine kills, while James Lawless had six and Nathan Wright (three aces) five.
Boys ultimate
Northfield Mount Hermon 13, Northampton 8 — Hayden Feldscher, Riley Cirincione-Lynch and Zack Frenier each scored two goals, but the Blue Devils fell on the road.
Clem Fisher had three assists and Kaleb Zuckerman two.
Zuckerman, Asa Thomson, Feldscher, Matan Fields and Clem Fisher each had one defended pass.
