NORTHAMPTON – A 19-year-old resident of Southampton who crashed their truck Saturday morning on Sylvester Road was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, police said.
Police were alerted to a loud crash at 1:39 a.m. near 374 Sylvester Road and they found a severely damaged pickup truck off the roadway along the tree line, Police Chief Jody Kasper wrote in a Facebook post. The Southampton resident was transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital and charged with an OUI, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speeding and being a minor in possession of alcohol, police said.
Kasper said that police officers found open and unopened cans of alcohol strewn about the crash scene. Police also said they detected signs of impairment from the driver.
“The investigation revealed that the driver had been traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control of the truck,” Kasper wrote. “The vehicle then slid into a large rock, rolled over, and came to rest on the side of the road.”
When police arrived on the scene of the crash, they said they found the driver with minor injuries. The driver told police there were two other passengers who fled the scene after the crash. The passengers were later located and they declined medical attention, Kasper wrote.
