SOUTHAMPTON — Voters decided on new members for the town’s Select Board and Water Commission on Tuesday, and decided not to make the town treasurer and town clerk appointed positions.
Christine Fowles defeated Charles Kaniecki 434 to 293 for a seat on the Select Board, according to unofficial totals from the town clerk’s office. Fowles will replace James Labrie after he decided not to run for re-election.
Fowles, 66, grew up in Southampton but only moved back two years ago. She had spent 40 years working in Africa.
For the Water Commission seat, Joseph Slattery defeated Kaniecki 445 to 250.
Slattery, 79, retired as the town’s water superintendent, a post he held from the mid-1980s until three years ago.
Voters also faced two ballot questions that, if approved, would have made the town treasurer and town clerk positions appointed by the Select Board. However, both questions were defeated.
