GRANBY – The Granby girls softball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Western Massachusetts Division 3 tournament with a dominant performance over Westfield Tech on Friday afternoon.
Big offensive performances in the second and third innings pushed the Rams to a 20-0 victory in five innings over the Tigers.
Granby, the No. 7 seed, who were just 2-16 last season, will travel to No. 2 Mount Everett on Sunday for the quarterfinals.
“We’re going to see much more speed,” Granby coach Gary Casey said. “The game is at Mt. Everett, a pretty intense atmosphere. Its tucked away in the woods, they have concession, they play music, everyone from town goes. But it’s 60 feet from the plate to first base on every diamond you’re going to play on. It doesn’t matter, its just noise, focus on the game.”
Granby pitcher Linsey Wenzel was dominant on both sides of the ball against Westfield Tech. On the mound, Wenzel allowed just five hits.
“It felt good to be able to do what I can do and not over do it, but still be able to win,” Wenzel said. “We really just wanted this game and we want to go far into the playoffs.”
She went 2-for-3 with an inside the park home run on a hit to deep center in the bottom of the second that scored three runs.
“It just felt really good,” Wenzel said. “Too bad it wasn’t a grand slam, but close enough. I tried my hardest and I wanted to get it over the fence.”
Senior catcher Kaeleigh Croteau, who was 4-for-4, hit a two-run inside the park home run for the Rams, putting the team up 13-0 in the bottom of the third.
“It’s my first time playing softball this year,” Croteau said. “I played soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. Softball was different but I got used to it and I love it. It’s big to hit that in playoffs, and it was nice to see it come in playoffs.”
At the top of the third inning, second baseman Belle Lanou made a leaping catch on a line drive by Westfield Tech’s Delaney Kukucka for the third out, stranding Leilani Marsh at first base.
Kelsey Myers was 1-for-3 and scored two runs for the Rams. Julia Gauvin was 2-for-5 with a ground rule double in the third. She also stole home in the first inning.
“We had a good three days of practice,” coach Gary Casey said. “We had a game Monday to finish out the season, and then worked on some things. Mostly, its all about focus. I think we were focused today and you saw the results.”
