NORTHAMPTON — A heat advisory has been issued for parts of the state including western Massachusetts on Tuesday as the heat index is expected to fall between 95 and 100 degrees.

The National Weather Service issued a warning until 8 p.m. detailing that temperatures falling between the upper 80s and mid 90 degrees combined with dew points of between 60 and 70 degrees will create a brutally hot day.

“We want to make sure any physical activity you have to do is done early in the morning or evening hours,” said Alan Dunham, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Norton.

Dunham said to drink water, stay in air conditioning as much as possible, check in on elderly neighbors and wear light-colored, loose clothing.

Though no such advisory has been issued for tomorrow, Dunham said temperatures on Wednesday could also climb to around 90 degrees.

However, a potential for greater cloud coverage and rain tomorrow might make Wednesday significantly cooler than today, he said.

“It’s still going to be very muggy,” he said.
