I recently read with dismay that three of our downtown businesses are closing at the height of tourist season. Cited as a reason is the proliferation of panhandling that is a daily part of life on the streets of Northampton.

I’ve avoided Main Street as much as possible, but had reason to walk from Thornes Marketplace to a local restaurant, three short blocks. I encountered no less than six panhandlers, many of whom were smoking. Now that we have extra revenue from pot sales, can that be put to use in combating this problem?

I’ve lived in Florence for over 30 years and remember when I felt proud of our city. I no longer feel that. It’s a wonder to me that any local businesses are able to stay alive.
