NORTHAMPTON — Algae blooms have made Magnolia and Triangle ponds unsafe for swimming, fishing and boating.
The Northampton Health Department announced Friday that cyanobacteria algae are growing in the ponds, which are off Hockanum Road and 1st Square Road near the Connecticut River.
Cyanobacteria, or “blue-green algae,” can produce toxins. Exposure can cause skin and eye irritation, and if ingested, they can cause gastrointestinal issues or neurological damage, according to a statement from the Northampton Public Health Department. People and pets can be affected.
Similar algae blooms have been found in Easthampton at Nashawannuck Pond and Lower Mill Pond.
The Northampton Health Department will notify the public when the water is safe again.
“If you believe you or your pet came into contact with this algae,” the department’s statement said, “you should immediately wash yourself/pet with clean water and contact your primary care physician or veterinarian.”
