NORTHAMPTON — A mixed-income housing development is one step closer to breaking ground at Village Hill.

State officials announced this week that North Commons at Village Hill is one of 11 projects that the state has given a total of $44.7 million in direct subsidy funding and $16 million in state and federal low-income housing tax credits.

North Commons, developed by The Community Builders, is a mixed-income housing development at Village Hill, a property that housed a state mental hospital until the 1990s and has been redeveloped into a neighborhood of mixed-income housing and commercial spaces. North Commons will include 53 units of rental housing, 12 of which will be for those earning 30 percent of the area median income or lower, and 27 of which will be for those with 60 percent of the area median income or lower.

The state did not announce the specific amount of money that the North Common project received and those details will take several more weeks, said Rachana Crowley, regional development manager at The Community Builders.

“It’s great news for us,” Crowley said of the announcement. “Essentially, the project has been funded.”

Construction is estimated to be completed in fall 2021.

The city is also contributing funding, including a $950,000 MassWorks Infrastructure Program grant awarded in December and $250,000 in Community Preservation Act funding, which the City Council was scheduled to vote on Thursday.
