NORTHAMPTON — Massachusetts State Police are investigating a Friday night crash on I-91 South that killed a boy from Springfield.
Troopers assigned to the Northampton state police barracks, along with the Northampton Fire Department and EMS, responded at around 10:36 p.m. to reports of a single-car crash on the highway at mile marker 21.8 in Northampton, according to a statement from state police.
Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered a 2007 Toyota Camry had left the road and the driver, a juvenile male from Springfield who was the sole occupant of the car, was killed in the crash, state police said. No further information about the victim was available.
A preliminary investigation showed the car was traveling south on the highway when, for reasons still under investigation, it left the road, went through a guardrail and down an embankment, police said. No other cars were involved in the crash.
The crash is being investigated by Troop B of the Massachusetts State Police, as well as the Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section and the Hampshire/Franklin County State Police Detective Unit, according to the statement.
