■The town of Hadley recently purchased a new police cruiser from Blyda For Sales Inc. of Northampton. The price was $2,360 with trade and was authorized at annual town meeting. The vehicle is equipped with a communications system and an electronic siren.
■Sister Blaithin, dean of academic affairs, has announced that F. Ellen McKay of North Amherst will join the Northampton Junior College faculty. Mrs. McKay will teach College Algebra and Intermediate Algebra.
■Potential mayoral challenger Roy C. Martin said he will ask the Board of Registrars to review his nomination papers after he failed to secure enough certified signatures to get on the Nov. 7 ballot. Although Martin, 54, submitted 68 signatures before the Aug. 1 deadline, the Registrar of Voters office certified only 46 names.
■Western Massachusetts’ two Democratic House members, John W. Olver of Amherst and Richard E. Neal of Springfield, are raising significant amounts of money for the coming election cycle. Olver says he has raised $84,932 in the first half of 1995 and has $120,228 in his campaign warchest. Neal collected just over $51,020 since Jan. 1 and has $247,499 available for the next election.
■A 23-year-old woman with ties to Hampshire County won a monthlong contest Sunday to become MTV’s first ever “Twitter jockey.” Gabi Gregg, a Detroit native who graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 2008, will report on pop culture news using Twitter, Facebook, blogs and MTV’s website.
■The first contested race for Northwestern district attorney in nearly three decades features two Democrats with similar stances on the issues. Out on the campaign trail, Michael A. Cahillane and Dave Sullivan are working hard to distinguish themselves by highlighting their skills and experience.
