■Who has said “Smith College” more times than anyone else in its history? There is no doubt that the winner is Mrs. Mary Harvey, the college switchboard operator for the past 37 years. She will make her last connection at the end of August, when she retires.

■”This Was Burlesque,” a musical currently at Storrowton Theatre in West Springfield, features a former Northampton resident as lead dancer. Helen Levit, an accomplished young dancer whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Slobodyanik, lived at 30 Norwood Ave., has been with “Burlesque” for five years.

■More than 200 acres of former farmland on Edwards Road in Westhampton will be preserved, thanks to its donation by a longtime town resident to the Massachusetts Audubon Society. John Lynes, of 44 Edwards Road, has agreed to donate about 215 acres, a rectangular parcel located northeast of the intersection of Edwards and Laurel Hill roads.

■Having noticed increased drinking in city parking lots, Northampton police last night went out on their third alcohol sweep in two years and arrested 11 underage drinkers. Of the 11 youths arrested, none was from Northampton, indicating to officials one again, that the city attracts youths from up and down the Pioneer Valley.

■In their first public debate, the two candidates for Northwestern district attorney Tuesday traded barbs and offered differing views on how the region’s top law enforcement post should be run. Both Democrats, Michael Cahillane and Dave Sullivan continued to contrast their backgrounds, each saying he has the better qualifications.

■School principals would be required to report any instances of bullying to the parents of the students involved under new guidelines proposed Tuesday by state education officials. The guidelines from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education were required under an anti-bullying law Gov. Deval Patrick signed in May.
