EASTHAMPTON — Greg Nuttelman has been hired as the director of the city’s Department of Public Works.
“The city’s really given me an exciting opportunity,” said Nuttleman, who is 37.
Nuttelman’s appointment was unanimously approved by the city’s Board of Public Works by a 3-0 vote last week. Nuttelman had beens serving as DPW director in an interim capacity.
Nuttelman’s pay is $45.95 an hour for a 40-hour work week, although he won’t be eligible for overtime pay. This works out to be more than $95,000 a year.
Nuttelman, who grew up in Northampton, started working at the Easthampton DPW in 2016. Before being named interim director, he served as the department’s water supervisor.
Because his job as water supervisor has not yet been filled, Nuttelman said he’s been doing work in those responsibilities as well.
Going forward, Nuttelman said the department is looking to do reconstruction on Union Street in the next couple of years and to work with the Board of Public Works to establish a long-term structure for water and sewer rates in the city.
Easthampton Mayor Nicole LaChapelle, who appointed Nuttelman, said she’s looking to get more funding for the department.
Nuttleman’s predecessor, Joseph Pipczynski, was the DPW director in Easthampton for more than 30 years before stepping down earlier this year.
Asked if he’s looking at the job as a long-term proposition, Nuttleman responded, “We’ll see. I think the city’s moving in a really good direction. I’m looking to be around for a while.”
