■Two local men will travel to the World Weightlifting Championships in Ohio later this month to study techniques. Doug Cooney and Bob Gray have both been spending their spare hours in the weightlifting room of the new Northampton YMCA. Cooney carried off the middle heavyweight class at the AAU Jr. New England Championship held at Lawrence in April, while Gray took second for light-heavies at the same meet.
■Sunny skies and a full program of activities today prompted officials of Northamptons Three County Fair to predict a record-breaking Saturday turnout at the fairgrounds. Today is the final day of the weeklong fair, which will close at 9:30 with a gala fireworks display at the grandstand.
■The Three-County Fair may mean fun to some – to Northampton police officers it’s work. For the nine days the fair operates, the Northampton Police Department supplies 32 officers, working an estimated 40 hours each, according to Sgt. Francis Sweeney.
■The September increase of pedestrians and vehicles downtown has police on alert. To make sure downtown motorists understand that marked crosswalks are a safe-zone for pedestrians, police will pay special attention in the coming weeks to motorists not obeying the law.
