Expectations were high for the Turners Falls field hockey team entering this season. After a season-opening victory against Mahar last week, the Thunder made another impressive statement on Tuesday.
Logan Addison scored three goals, and visiting Turners Falls knocked off defending Western Massachusetts Division 2 champion Frontier Regional, 4-2, in South Deerfield.
Hannah Marchefka also found the back of the net for Turners (2-0), which received two assists from Brynn Tela and one from Taryn Thayer. The visitors led 3-1 at halftime, and kept the pressure on over the final two quarters.
Frontier (1-1) received goals from Savannah Upton and Emily DeMaio. Shelby Clark assisted on Upton’s marker.
“Turners is a great team,” Frontier coach Missy Mahar said. “I’m proud of my girls. I thought they stayed resilient in the second half even though we were behind.”
Westfield 5, Holyoke 1 — Naressa Kempadoo scored and Isabell Murphy made seven saves for the Purple Knights.
Belchertown 1, South Hadley 1 — Tyler Evans stopped a penalty kick in the third quarter as the Tigers held on to tie the defending state champions. Evans dove low to his left and caught the attempt for one of his 15 saves.
Arya Kouzehkanani scored from 20 yards out on a free kick to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the second quarter. Belchertown answered when Ethan Czaporowski scored in the second from Shay O’Neill
Thomas Vinagre made three saves for the Orioles.
Easthampton 6, Gateway Regional 1 — Carter Hebert scored three goals, while Javier Simms (assist), Carter Doughdrill (assist) and Anthony Soucy (two assists) each had one as the Eagles rolled in Huntington.
Griffin Foskitt made two saves in net for Easthampton.
Owen Pryzbyla scored for the Gators, while Preston Coffey (eight saves) and Dominic Zajko (three saves) shared time in goal.
Amherst Regional 5, Granby 0 — The Hurricanes scored four times in the second half to win at home.
Matthew Firrine tallied four goals, while Zachary Watson-Stevens added one. Jamie Park finished with two assists. James Serhant and Michael Camara each had one helper.
Owen Young and Connor Plankey combined for four saves in the shutout.
Dan Gauvin made eight saves for the Rams in their opener.
Smith Vocational 3, St. Mary’s 1 —
Cole Boisvert scored all three goals for the Vikings, while Seth Boissonault had one assist in the road win.
Louis Kollmeier made seven saves for the win.
Westfield Tech 4, PVCICS 0 — Abram Speek made seven saves but the hosts lost in Hadley.
Hampshire Regional 5, Northampton 0 — Maggie Rubeck had two goals and one assist as the Raiders rolled on the road.
Katelynn Dunn (assist), Parker Pallante and Larissa Riley also scored, while Riley Shaughnessy and Caroline Taylor each had one assist.
Hampshire led 3-0 after the first quarter.
Emily Yan made four saves in the shutout.
Caroline Riordan made five saves for Northampton.
Westfield Tech 188, Easthampton 197 — Tyler Cortis shot a 40 to earn medalist honors, but the Eagles fell in Westfield. Mikey Thompson (51), Drew Thompson (52) and Cole Keefe (54) closed it out for Easthampton.
Agawam 168, Holyoke 184 — Matt Dulude carded a 42 and Jacob Tassinari added a 46, but the Purple Knights fell at Wyckoff Country Club. John Lavelle (47) and Ryan Maloney (49) rounded out the score.
Pope Francis 152, Central 250 — Ryan Leonard, of Amherst, carded a 38 and Ben Zaranek, of South Deerfield, had a 39 as the Cardinals won their opener at Veterans Memorial Golf Course.
