HOLYOKE — A Monday night fire at an apartment building on North East Street left a family of three displaced, according to the city’s Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to fire alarms at 13 N. East St. at around 6 p.m. where they found heavy smoke in the basement of the multi-unit apartment building, according to Holyoke Fire Capt. Kevin Cavagnac.
Firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to see through the smoke which allowed them to see a fire burning in a ventilation/light shaft.
Although the blaze was quickly extinguished, it had extended into the walls and window frames of two first-floor apartments, Cavagnac said. Another apartment received significant water damage.
One family of three was displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Fire Department with help from the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Fire Marshal’s Office.
