SOUTH DEERFIELD — A Frontier Regional School senior was reportedly the victim of a fatal single-vehicle crash on Mill Village Road Friday morning, according to school officials.
Deerfield Police Detective Sgt. Adam Sokoloski said police responded at around 5 a.m. Friday morning to a report of a single-vehicle crash. When they arrived at the scene, they found the driver had been ejected from the vehicle. The individual was transported by Northampton Fire Rescue to Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, where the person was pronounced dead.
The South Deerfield Fire Department used extrication equipment to remove a front seat passenger, Sokoloski said. A passenger in the back seat was also injured.
Both passengers were transported by South County EMS and AMR to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, according to Sokoloski. One passenger is reportedly in critical condition, while the other is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
In an email to Frontier Regional School families on Friday morning, Principal George Lanides wrote that the other two occupants of the vehicle are former Frontier students.
“We are devastated by this news and our hearts go out to these students and their families,” he said.
According to Lanides, counselors plan to hold an open Google Meet on Friday and Monday. The link for this has been emailed to families.
“Our community has already gone above and beyond this year in coming together to overcome the challenges of COVID-19,” Lanides wrote. “We know that we can lean on each other again now to support our students through this tragedy. We are grateful for each and every one of our students and families, and we will do everything we can to support you through this difficult time.”
Mill Village Road, from Stillwater Road to Routes 5 and 10, and Lee Road at the Interstate 91 bridge, were closed until about 10 a.m. as a result of the incident.
Sokoloski said the crash is under investigation by the Deerfield Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit attached to the Northwestern district attorney’s office, with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section.
