■Five electric golf carts, property of the Hickory Ridge Country Club, were stolen early this morning and driven into the Fort River. The two-seater carts were stored in a locked shed adjoining the club house. Each was worth $1,100.
■Miss Gloria Steinem, contributing editor and political columnist for the New York City weekly magazine, “New York,” will be the principal speaker at the 93rd Smith College commencement on Sunday. Her topic will be “The Politics of Women.”
■The forces arrayed against casino gambling in Holyoke promised last night to turn up the heat on the state Legislature until their side prevails. More than 125 people came to the Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School for a forum organized by Western Massachusetts Against Casinos.
■A member of the Amherst Fire Department was recognized Friday night for recently being named Paramedic of the Year by the state Department of Public Health. Charles Schmohl, a member of the Amherst Emergency Medical Service since 1994, is the first one in the department to receive the award.
■The Connecticut River Watershed Council has announced that Andrew Fisk has been named its new executive director. Fisk, who served as director of the Land and Water Bureau at the Maine Department of Environmental Protection for seven years, assumed the role last Monday.
■Traprock Center for Peace and Justice closed its doors on Miles Street in Greenfield earlier this year and is now run by a volunteer board. H. Patricia Hynes, chairwoman of that board, said Traprock did away with paid positions and its storefront as of Jan. 1.
