■An exhibition of natural curiosities, all living animals – the bison, the uris, the cervus Americanus, a calf with six legs, the catamount, the maucauco or mico, the marmoset — will be exhibited at the house of Mr. Freeman Coffin, lately occupied by Levi Williams, on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. ■The death of the Queen is confirmed by three or four arrivals at different ports in the United States. She died on the evening of the 7th of August, at 25 minutes past ten, of an inflammation of the bowels, after about a week’s illness. Thus has closed the life of Caroline, Queen of England!
■The rush of college girls began to come into this city last night and continued all through today. This evening the Owl train is expected in three sections with the balance of the girls, although a number will not arrive until tomorrow morning. College opens tomorrow.
■The pool room at the Y.M.C.A. is being redecorated and the pool tables covered with new felt. The bowling alleys have also been put in condition for the winter season.
■For Men Only Taverns are now a thing of the past. The traditional law of no women allowed in taverns was lifted this week and bartenders were notified that women must be served or else. The “or else” could be a charge of discrimination with penalties ranging from up to $300 or one year in jail plus $500 for “hurt feelings.”
■Three microphones valued at $1,000 taken from the altar of St. Brigid’s Church in Amherst over the weekend marred the celebration of the church’s 100th anniversary. Money boxes were also pried open but the Rev. John Ayers said they had recently been emptied so no money was lost.
