■On perusing your paper, I found in a notice of Reuben Belden’s of Southampton, that I, his wife Lucy, had absconded from his bed and board without any cause or provocation on his part. For my own vindication, I now state that his treatment towards me has been inhuman; from cross looks and angry word he has proceeded to kicks and blows, and I have twice been obliged to flee for my life and have sought refuge in my neighbor’s house. – Lucy Belden

■The high wind interfered with telegraph service all over New England today. Wires were blown down and short-circuited and in many cases temporarily put out of order. The Gazette’s telegraph service was considerably impaired, our operator receiving only about half as much news as usual.

■Vice President and Mrs. Coolidge are expected to come to this city Monday night to be on hand for election Tuesday. At present the Coolidges’ plans are to stay here over night, vote in the morning and then go on to Boston, where Mrs. Coolidge will attend the opening of a bazaar given by the Republican women of Massachusetts.

50 Years Ago

■Buffalo Bob Smith delighted an audience yesterday afternoon at Mount Holyoke College with tales of the old-time Howdy Doody Show, which was first telecast in 1947 and gave more performances than any show in the history of network television when it was taken off the air in 1960 — a whopping 2,343 shows.

■David Anusiewicz, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Anusiewicz of Grant Avenue, has received the Eagle Scout award, the highest honor possible in scouting. He earned 21 merit badges to attain that rank.
