UMass’ nearly month-long search for a men’s basketball coach appears nearly over.
The job has been offered to former South Carolina and Kansas State coach Frank Martin, according to multiple reports Thursday.
CBS Sports’ John Rothstein tweeted shortly after 4 p.m. that UMass had offered Martin the job and they were working on details of a potential deal.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Martin met with UMass officials in South Carolina on Thursday.
Martin spent the previous 10 years at South Carolina, leading the Gamecocks to the 2017 Final Four. He was let go by South Carolina on March 14 and appeared on CBS’ NCAA men’s basketball coverage. Martin spent the previous five years as Kansas State’s head coach and also was an assistant at Northeastern and Cincinnati. He has a 288–201 career record, including 10-5 in the NCAA Tournament.
South Carolina owes him a $3 million buyout.
UMass created the opening when it announced Matt McCall wouldn’t return March 1. He coached the Minutemen’s remaining four games, leading them to the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals.
Martin has ties to UMass, as his wife Anya was a track star for the Minutewomen.
