Backcourt firepower is crossing state lines.
Former UConn guard Rahsool Diggins will transfer to UMass, he confirmed Monday.
The Philadelphia native tweeted a gif of UMass mascot Sam the Minuteman dancing after retweeting several tweets reporting his commitment. Adam Zagoria first reported the news.
Diggins, a 6-foot-2 freshman last season, appeared in just nine games for the Huskies last season. He scored seven points.
The former four-star prospect played high school basketball at Archbishop Wood, north of Philadelphia. Diggins was the 59th-ranked prospect in the country by 247sports coming out of high school and the nation’s No. 10 point guard. He chose the Huskies over Kansas and Florida, among others.
Diggins is the third transfer to join UMass out of the portal this spring, joining former South Carolina players – who were there under new UMass coach Frank Martin – Wildens Leveque and Ta’Quan Woodley.
Thus far only sophomore guard Javohn Garcia has left the program through the transfer portal.
RECRUITING TRAIL – Martin also started building the Minutemen’s roster for the future. Class of 2022 point guard Keon Thompson of Merrillville, IN, committed to UMass on Twitter on Monday. He posted a highlight package of him in a Minutemen jersey dunking and dribbling a basketball.
The 6-foot-1 guard has a 6-foot-7 wingspan. Once he makes it to campus next season (2022-23), Thompson will be UMass’ first true freshman since the 2020-21 season.
Chicago-area big man Brian Mathews committed to the Minutemen for last season but ultimately signed with North Dakota.
