AMHERST – A singles sweep gave the Amherst Regional girls tennis team a 3-2 victory over East Longmeadow at Amherst Regional Middle School on Thursday.
Ava Carvel dispatched Elsa Ma 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to open the scoring for the Hurricanes. Rebekah Hong won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles over Jamie Bellerose.
At No. 1 Singles, Sofia DaSilva-Askew handled Ainsley Smith 6-2, 6-3 for Amherst (6-3).
Amherst’s Ella McDermott and Kate Markowski fell 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles against Elena Ruiz and Sara Kulla.
East Longmeadow’s Allie Osman and Ella Cushman defeated Daniella Sherman and Keeley Kaye, 6-2, 6-0.
Belchertown 4, Agawam 1 – Belchertown won all three of their singles matches and their No. 1 doubles match against Agawam on Thursday.
No. 1 singles Ava Shea (6-0, 6-0), No. 2 singles Amber Drummond (6-1, 6-1) and No. 3 singles Zoe Bate (6-2, 6-2) won their individual matches, and the No. 1 doubles team of Brooke Burrows and Kasey Gibbons (6-4, 6-2) won their match in straight sets as well.
Frontier 3, PVCICS 2 — A pair of doubles wins propelled the Redhawks past the Dragons in South Deerfield on Thursday.
Sydney Scanlon and Sam Baker picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win in No. 1 doubles while Grace O’Leary and Hashini Ratnatunge earned a 6-0, 6-0 triumph in No. 2 doubles for Frontier. The Redhawks won No. 3 singles via forfeit to get the victory.
Northampton 5, South Hadley 0 – Four of Northampton’s tennis players won their matches in straight sets, and No. 3 singles Annalisa Agliati (4-6, 7-5, 10-7) defeated Esther Ngure from South Hadley in a 10-point tiebreaker to secure the clean sweep for the Blue Devils.
No. 1`singles Summer Sorenson (6-1, 6-2) and No. 2 Daria Warren (6-2, 6-2) won the remaining two single matches, and the doubles teams of No. 1 Phoebe Ryan and Josie Kirley (6-3, 6-4) and No. 2 Julia Krivoy-Einhorn and Tamar Feinland (6-0, 6-1) completed the win.
Frontier 8, Easthampton 7 — Trailing 5-1 after three innings, the Redhawks rallied to score four in the fourth and ultimately pulled out an 8-7 Suburban League West win in Easthampton on Thursday.
The host Eagles led 6-5 going into the fifth before Frontier pushed a pair across in the top of the inning and didn’t relinquish the advantage.
Liam Skribiski-Banack nearly went the distance, striking out six in six and two-third innings work. Tyler Cusson came on to get a strikeout with the bases loaded to seal the win.
Kevin Baumann cracked three hits and brought in a pair of runs for Frontier (10-3, 7-0). Tyler Baranowski had a pair of hits and RBIs, Skribiski-Banack had a pair of hits and an RBI, Tyler Dubreuil and Iain Spearance each tallied two hits, and Aidan Drury had a hit and an RBI in the win.
Easthampton’s Topher Reardon had a pair of hits, including a double, and two RBIs, while Otis Follet added a hit and drove in a pair. Zak Thibodeau, Matt Damon and Michael Thompson each had a hit and an RBI.
Holyoke 11, South Hadley 10 – The Purple Knights bested the Tigers in an extra-inning thriller on Thursday night. Tied 9-9 heading into the eighth, South Hadley scored the go-ahead run in the top of the frame, but Holyoke’s Martin Phillips got his second base hit of the game in the bottom of the eighth to drive in Anibal Diaz and Nicolas Consedine and win the contest.
Three Holyoke pitchers split time on the mound – Ethan McClain started for Holyoke, throwing four innings, striking out five and allowing eight hits, before Phillips came on in relief. Phillips had a strikeout and allowed six hits in 3.1 innings of work before Braeden Lamirade came on to secure the win with just four pitches.
Phillips led the way at the plate with two hits and four RBIs, along with David Sicard, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
South Hadley’s Tyler Evans threw five innings, striking out eight, walking seven and allowing eight hits. Nathan Carillon took over for the last 2.2 innings, striking out three and allowing four hits.
Evans went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and three runs, and Aidan Sullivan went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs.
Hopkins Academy 7, Hampshire 2 – Patrick Fitzgibbons homered and doubled, driving in three runs for the Golden Hawks (4-4) at home.
Hopkins Academy’s Cody West struck out 10 in 6 2/3 innings. He and Andrew Ciaglo each had two hits.
Hampshire’s Ben Hogan drew two walks, scored a run and singled. Justin Meunier and Jake Sicard added a hit each for the Raiders (7-5).
Amherst 9, Chicopee 4 – Spencer Waite, Nate Mills (two walks) and Evan Dooley each singled and scored two runs for the Hurricanes (6-7) at home.
Northampton 4, Minnechaug 2 – Down 2-1 going into the bottom of the sixth, Wesley Parent hit a ground-rule double to tie the game and Jonathan Calhoun drilled a single that scored two more to give the Blue Devils the game-winning runs in a redemption win over Minnechaug.
Nate Kelleher-Mochak threw 6.2 innings, allowing four hits and striking out six. Peter Sullivan came in for the save.
Mount Greylock 11, Belchertown 1 – Joey Mankowsky and Tim Mitus each went 2-for-3 in a road loss for the Orioles (5-5).
Hampshire 14, Chicopee 1 (5) – Jocelyn Mettey went 3-for-3 with two dou bles and three RBIs for the raiders.
Hampshire’s Ella Melancon also drove in three runs with a triple among her two hits.
Theresa Saldis scored three runs and went 3-for-4 with a double for Hampshire (9-2).
Lacey Chapdelaine struck out eight, allowing just two hits and two walks to earn the win.
Athol 7, Smith Academy 0 – Amanda Novak picked up both of Smith Academy’s hits in a 7-0 loss on Tuesday.
Novak also threw all seven innings for the Falcons, striking out seven and allowing seven hits.
East Longmeadow 17, Northampton 4 – Ella Pelis and Molly Allen each picked up two hits in the Blue Devils loss to East Longmeadow.
Kaliya Valentin threw eight strikeouts for the Blue Devils in the loss.
Greenfield 22, Frontier 2 (5) — Amber Bergeron crushed a three-run homer, finishing 3-for-3 with four RBIs to help lead the Green Wave to a FCL West victory at Vets Field on Thursday.
Sophia Pinardi knocked a double, Jazzy Hayes hit a single and Ashley Taylor had an RBI single for Frontier (2-12, 0-7) in the loss.
Amherst 18, Renaissance 0 – The Hurricanes mercied Renaissance on Thursday to remain undefeated and improve to 9-0 on the season.
Sofia Holden struck out 13 batters in five innings and hit a home run in the bottom of the fourth.
Belchertown 5, South Hadley 0 – Belchertown’s Trevor Weiss won No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-1), Kiernan Corish won No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-1) and Nick Adzima and Michael Alves took the victory in No. 1 doubles (6-0, 6-0) to propel the Orioles to their fourth consecutive team win.
The No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles matches were awarded to Belchertown via forfeit.
East Longmeadow 3, Granby 2 – The Rams pushed the Spartans to five sets, but fell in a tight match on Thursday.
Granby won the first two sets 25-20, 25-21, but dropped the next three to East Longmeadow 25-10, 25-23, 15-11.
Amherst Red Sox 6, Amherst Royals 0 – Derek Gromacki and Brady Klaes each finished with three hits, and Klaes and Max Lashway combined for a shutout on the mound against the Royals.
Wyatt Cook got one hit for the Royals in the loss.
