50 Years Ago

■Amherst College President John William Ward, Cornelia Mendenhall, wife of Smith College President Thomas Mendenhall, Hampshire College Dean Richard Lyon and poetess Denise Levertov were among some 450 people arrested outside the gates of Westover Air Force Base early today. Those arrested were engaging in civil disobedience to protest President Nixon’s new moves in the Vietnam war.

■Charles Lyons, chairman of the Solid Waste Management Commission, announced last night that the Recycling Center at the DPW yard “is collecting an unbelievable amount of reusable waste” but may run into financial troubles. DPW chief William Warren explained that out of a starting budget of $13,000, “we had to spend $7,800 on a compactor rental and $4,800 on the mini-stations.”

■This summer, Florence will once again have what it has lacked for over 30 years — its own ZIP code. The return of 01062 to Florence has more to do with the efficiency of mail delivery than with the petition by residents to bring the long-lost five-digit number back.

■Construction begins next week for The Children’s House, the Montessori school on Bates Street, which now has permission to build new classrooms to accommodate as many as 40 more students. The Planning Board on Thursday voted unanimously to allow the school to construct an addition next to its 51 Bates St. building.

■With a new venue, a new parade route and some high-profile political speakers on the program, organizers of this year’s Noho Pride march and rally say events are shaping up to be both a celebration and a continued call to action in support of diversity. Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren is on the roster to speak Saturday at the event.

■Edward Forman, music director at Hopkins Academy, will hang up his baton this weekend after 34 years as the school’s music director. Forman graduated from Hopkins in 1971 and went on to become a fixture at the school.
