HOLYOKE — The man killed by an Amtrak train Saturday afternoon has been identified as Luis Colon, 58, of Holyoke.
According to a news release from Amtrak, the incident occurred around 2:22 p.m. and caused no reported injuries to passengers or crew. Colon was trespassing on the tracks, Amtrak stated.
The train that hit Colon was Amtrak Vermonter Train 57, traveling from St. Albans, Vermont, to Washington. It was delayed for approximately an hour and a half, Amtrak reported.
Holyoke Police responded to the tracks near St. Kolbe Drive downtown at around 2:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the department. Colon was pronounced dead at the scene, and the conductor was interviewed. Holyoke Police secured the scene before turning the investigation over to Amtrak Police.
In a statement, Amtrak said that trespassing along the railroad right-of-way is the leading cause of rail-related deaths in America, according to the Federal Railroad Administration, with railroad crossing incidents being the second most frequent cause.
Amtrak also directed people to stayoffthetracks.org for rail safety information.
