■Senior Wilderness Rangers of Hampshire Regional YMCA spent a “miserable night” Wednesday as they were bombarded by mosquitoes while camping out along the Appalachian Trail in Sheffield. The Rangers are on an eight-day, 50-mile hike from Falls Village, Conn. to Becket, Mass.

■Army Pvt. David A. Bartoszewicz, son of Mrs. Greta A. Bartoszewicz of Edgewood Terrace, has completed nine weeks of advanced individual training at the U.S. Army Infantry training center at Fort Polk, La. The 23-year-old soldier is a 1967 graduate of Northampton High School.

■Police are investigating a rash of bicycle thefts — 10 alone this weekend. One attempted theft Friday resulted in an arrest. “It is quite a bit of bikes that are disappearing,” said Detective Patrick J. Garvey.

■A Florence teen who “mooned” a police officer who was taking pictures found himself in jail last night. When the officer took some photographs of a group of teenagers walking down the street, one of them shouted, “Take a picture of this,” and pulled down his pants and show him his buttocks, according to police reports.

■It’s a tough job market for teens looking for work this summer, according to Jim Parcells, the Franklin Hampshire Career Center Youth Program director. “This summer less than 30% of teens will be able to find jobs,” Parcells said. Parcells believes that teenagers in Northampton or Amherst will have an easier time finding work than their more rural counterparts, as there are more establishments in these areas that employ teenagers.

■It’s now more expensive to buy a monthly parking pass in the city, but not as expensive as originally proposed earlier this year. The City Council Thursday night agreed to increase the cost of monthly passes for long-term lots and 10-hour meters from $30 to $45. The mayor had called for doubling the price to $60.
