■Sunday marked the occasion of Goshen’s First Annual Frog Jumping Contest. At the close of the contest, the winner was Sweet Sue, a formidable contestant with a leaping total of 8 feet, 6 inches to her three-hop credit. She was entered by Bryon Fuller of Hadley.

■Preparations continued today at the Three County Fairgrounds in Northampton for the 30th annual Eastern National Morgan Horse Show which opens Wednesday. Several hundred horses, horse-owners, trainers, and handlers will be at the show.

■Despite the unseasonable chilly temperatures, shoppers flocked to downtown Northampton yesterday for SummerFest ’97, sampling ethnic foods and taking advantage of what one shopper delightedly called “seriously discounted products.”

■James Levey, a longtime volunteer and staff member at the Northampton Survival Center, and Peter Stein, the center’s program director, have resigned. They will be replaced by Evelyn McCoy, a former family day care provider who begins her new job Monday.

■Ten Iraqi women at Smith College are busy working on experiments to identify proteins. They are at Smith for the month of July as part of a State Department initiative that’s bringing women from Muslim-majority countries to U.S. women’s colleges to gain experience in science, technology, engineering and math, as well as American culture.

■In an effort to give its agriculture students practical experience, the University of Massachusetts announced Monday it is moving forward with plans to open a new Agriculture Learning Center at the former Wysocki Farm in 2014.
