■Youth employment, never easy to come by in Hampshire County in the summertime, is that much harder to come by this summer. About 275 youth under 22 years of age are in need of work, according to Bernard Shea, head interviewer at the state Division of Employment Security. “I thought it was bad last year. But it’s worse this summer.”

■The Northampton Planning Board last night elected Charles Baranowski to succeed Everett Ladd as chairman of the board. “I feel it would be in the best interest of the board to elect a new chairman,” Ladd said. He cited an increase in his workload as president of the Northampton National Bank as a factor in his desire to step down.

■The Northampton Musical Theater Workshop and Showcase, directed this summer for the fourth year by Tom Smith and Norinne Tiley, will present a Broadway revue on Tuesday. The show culminates a two-week workshop that included singing, choreography and acting exercises.

■Heeding an apparent need, Holyoke Community College will be offering a new program for students interested in deaf studies beginning in this fall. The Deaf Studies Program will be part-time until next spring when the college will decide whether to award it full-time status or cancel it.

■Plans to redevelop most of the Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech campus into a luxury apartment complex took a big leap forward after the school signed a purchase-and-sale agreement with the OPAL Real State Group of Springfield.

■More than 500 impeccably groomed Morgan horses settled into the Three County Fairgrounds this week for the 73rd annual New England Morgan Horse Show. The show is the second-largest Morgan event in the United States.
