Garrett Wait won’t get the chance to play out his extra season of eligibility for the UMass hockey team.
The graduate student received a medical disqualification and his college career is over, UMass officials confirmed Thursday. Though he won’t be playing, Wait will remain a part of the UMass hockey program.
During his two years in Amherst, Wait, who began his career at Minnesota, played in 61 games an amassed 52 points with 22 goals. None were more important than the Edina, Minn., native’s overtime tally against Minnesota Duluth in the 2021 Frozen Four to send the Minutemen to the national championship game. He won a national championship and two Hockey East championships with UMass.
The permanent injury status/medical disqualification allows UMass to continue to provide a student athletically-related financial aid without it counting against scholarship limits for the season.
