■Retired Police Chief John Joseph Trainor, 87, one of Amherst’s most widely known and respected citizens, died last night at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Born in Williamsburg, he came to Amherst in 1926 as a patrolman. Ten years later he was promoted to be police chief.

■Attorneys Kenneth B. Bowen and Andrew J. Siegel are moving the Bowen and Siegel law offices from 39 Main St. to new quarters at 40 Center St. The Center Street offices, across from the Registry of Motor Vehicles, have undergone extensive renovations. New shutters, landscaping and lighting are yet to be installed.

■After watching the north sidewalk of Main Street in Northampton “turn black and filthy” from increased pedestrian traffic over the past few months, Country Comfort owner Eve Trager decided to take matters into her own hands and clean the sidewalk herself. On July 17, Trager and several other proprietors whose businesses are located on Main Street’s north side gathered to spray down the sidewalk from Joia to the Gazebo.

■The Washington players may doubt his chances, but William F. Weld is resigning as governor of Massachusetts because he still thinks he has a chance at being confirmed U.S. ambassador to Mexico. Weld confirmed his resignation, effective Tuesday, as he arrived at the Statehouse this morning.

■Amherst will receive more than $300,000 to invest in renewable energy projects and reduce energy consumption following its designation by the state as a Green Community. Amherst Town Manager John Musante said he is pleased to receive the recognition.

■Teddy Forance, a Southampton native who grew up dancing at his family’s studio, the Hackworth School of Performing Arts in Easthampton, is about to become a bona fide TV star. His new reality show, “All the Right Moves,” premieres Tuesday on the Oxygen network.
