South Hadley’s Emma Sanford represented Hampshire County well at the MIAA Indoor Track Meet of Champions on Saturday.

The senior posted a top finish in the 55-meter hurdles, where she placed fourth overall at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. In the preliminary round, Sanford advanced with a time of 8.61 seconds, and she followed that up with a fourth-place time of 8.48 seconds in the finals. Obi Akubude of Concord-Carlisle won the All-State title in 8.31 seconds, and Frontier Regional’s Caroline Crocker wound up 13th in the event in 8.79 seconds.

Sanford also qualified and competed in both the long jump and high jump on Saturday.

In the long jump, she placed 14th overall with a top leap of 16 feet, 7 inches, and in the high jump she nabbed a tie for 15th place with a best clearance of 5 feet even. Tantasqua’s Haley McCormack won the high jump title at 5-6, while Grace Hanafin of Burlington took home the long jump crown (17-8½). 

On the boys’ side, Amherst junior David Pinero-Jacome qualified and competed in the 1,000 meters where he finished 17th overall in 2 minutes, 45.88 seconds. Colin Kirn of Andover was the All-State champ in 2:30.08.

The Northampton 4×800-meter relay team of Davis Wheat, Jude Mourad, Theodore King-Pollet and Jack Kamins powered to a 13th-place finish on Saturday with a time of 8:24.50. Newton North won the team title in 7:57.84.

Pinero-Jacome also ran a leg of the Hurricanes’ 4×800-meter relay team that qualified and finished 15th on Saturday. Along with classmates Miguel Pinero-Jacome and Kyle Yanko, and senior Diego Lopez, Amherst crossed with a time of 8:28.46.

Boys basketball

Keefe Tech 77, Smith Voc 47 — Myles Chinappa scored a team-high 17 points for the Vikings in a 77-47 loss to Keefe Tech in a MVADA Small School Vocational semifinal contest on Saturday in Northampton.

Jayon Black followed with 14 points and Marshall Ingram tallied 11 points for Smith Vocational (13-8), which trailed 34-24 at halftime.

The Vikings now turn their attention to the MIAA Division 5 tourney, where they are the No. 46 seeds and will play at No. 19 Calvary Chapel Academy in the preliminary round on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Williston results

The Williston Northampton girls hockey team received two goals from Monique Lyons and one from Zola Piekarski to snag a 3-1 win over BB&N on Saturday in Cambridge.

The Wildcats finished their regular season 24-0-1, and will be the No. 1 seed in the NEPSAC Tournament which begins Wednesday against Loomis. Liv Ferebee earned the victory in net.

Elsewhere, the boys basketball team took down Kingswood Oxford, 68-38, and will be the No. 3 seed in the NEPSAC tourney on Wednesday against Trinity-Pawling. The Wildcats (17-6) were led by Paul Ippolito with 21 points and Connor Jenkins with 14.

The girls basketball team received 19 points from Skyler Walker and a pair of 3’s from Meg Carey in a 48-35 season-ending loss to Kent School.

The girls varsity squash team fell to Pomfret, 4-2, despite wins from Louisa Coughlin and Betsy Gaudreau.
