It didn’t take Talia Sadiq very long to score her 100th goal in the Amherst girls’ lacrosse team’s 20-2 win over Springfield Central on Thursday.
Sadiq needed just one more goal to reach the milestone, and she was the player who opened the scoring for the Hurricanes on Thursday.
“It was a turnover from Jenna [Schilling] and I was right in front of the goal. She just passed it to me and I was pretty much wide open,” Sadiq said.
The junior didn’t realize how close she was to the 100-goal marker until the team’s game against Hampshire on Tuesday, and it added a little bit of pressure as she chased down the milestone.
“It was exciting – it was a relief,” she said.
After she scored, Amherst head coach Andrew MacDougall called a timeout so the team could celebrate. Sadiq’s teammates gave her a signed game ball and a poster to commemorate the occasion.
“It wasn’t really anything I thought about until this season,” Sadiq said on her accomplishment. “I started playing in sixth grade. It wasn’t really my main sport when I started playing, but I’ve grown to love it.”
Sadiq added three more goals in the win, and teammate Abi Como hit a milestone of her own to add to the festivities, notching her 50th point and finishing the game with four goals. Francesca Sloan posted five points (4G, 1A) for the ‘Canes and goalie Cedar Conrad made six stops.
Amherst improved to 6-2 on the season. It returns to the field on Tuesday at Pittsfield.
