SOUTH HADLEY — The town is seeking to fill four positions on the Town Meeting Review Committee, which is tasked with improving the effectiveness and efficiency of Town Meeting and making formal recommendations for improvement.
The Town Meeting Ad-Hoc Review Committee was established as a standing committee in 2010. The first committee appointed in 2009 made numerous valuable recommendations, including establishing an electronic communications advisory committee and requiring that minutes of all boards and committees be posted to the town website.
A new review committee is appointed every five years, beginning in 2015. The committee consists of the moderator, one representative each of the Select Board, School Committee, Appropriations Committee and Planning Board, three Town Meeting members and up to four registered voters who are not Town Meeting members.
Registered voters who are not Town Meeting members and are interested in serving on this committee are asked to apply online at southhadley.org/ under the “Boards & Commissions” section of the “I Want To” drop-down menu.
HOLYOKE — The first and most successful fish lift on the Atlantic Coast, the Robert E. Barrett Fishway at the Holyoke Dam, opens for its annual viewing season on Wednesday, with special Mother’s Day activities on Sunday. Admission is free.
The Barrett Fishway, owned and operated by Holyoke Gas & Electric, consists of two elevators or “lifts” which carry migrating fish up and over the Holyoke Dam. Visitors can watch the lifts in action from an observation deck overlooking the Connecticut River.
The fishway is open for self-guided tours during regular business hours. In addition, HG&E will provide a guided tour each Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Continuing a decade-old tradition, all mothers visiting the fishway on Sunday will receive a free carnation to commemorate Mother’s Day and the spirit of rebirth on the Connecticut River.
In addition, the 56th Annual HG&E Shad Derby will be held on May 13-14 and May 20-21 with a grand prize of $1,000 in cash for the first-place winner in the senior division.
Located off Bridge Street (Route 116) in Holyoke, just west of the South Hadley bridge, the fishway’s season runs through June 18, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. The facility is closed on Monday and Tuesday, with the exception of Memorial Day from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
