Here’s a practical solution to the Democrats’ dilemma that’s based on political realities rather than appeals for the good of the country and preserving dignity. President Joe Biden controls virtually all the delegates to the Democratic convention and can release them in conjunction with an endorsement. He can negotiate with Michigan’s Governor Whitmer (and others best positioned to beat Trump) to obtain commitments on the policy issues most important to him and on appointing his key younger people to powerful cabinet positions. Biden then makes his endorsement and retreats to his proper role now — elder statesman with access, advising and counseling based on his wealth of experience.
