Logan Alfandari earned top billing among the Amherst Regional competitors at the second day of the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Eugene, Oregon with a first-place finish in the boys shot put.
Alfandari registered a toss of 57 feet, 9.75 inches to win the event in the Emerging Elite Division at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon on Friday.
Alfandari was also 20th in the discus with a toss of 152-9.
Both of the Hurricanes’ sprint medley relay teams ran as well and grabbed top-five finishes. The boys bunch of Tylahn Beckett, Owen Platt, Miles Jeffries and Nico Lisle snagged third place with a time of 3 minutes, 33.26 seconds – one second off a school record.
The girls quartet of Claire Fortin, Ruby Austin, Moriah Luetjen and Skylar Fox collected fifth place in a school-record time of 4:05.59.
The sprint medley requires the first two athletes to run the 200, the third to run the 400 and the final athlete to run the 800. Amherst competed in the Championship Division for both boys and girls.
In the mixed 4×400 relay, the team of Platt, Fox, Jeffries and Ololara Baptiste took ninth place in a school-record time of 3:30.60. The x200 girls relay of Fox, Fortin, Austin and Baptiste finished ninth in a school-record time of 1:43.11.
A pair of local athletes took to the track in Philadelphia for Day 2 of the New Balance Nationals meet. Trevor Sullivan of South Hadley ran the boys middle school 2 mile in 10:34.58 (63rd place), while Juliana Albo of Amherst competed in the freshman high jump (4 feet, 9 inches, 31st place) and long jump (16-8¾, 36th).
On Saturday, Belchertown’s Aubrey Klingensmith had her turn, competing in the freshman girls javelin in Philadelphia. Klingensmith finished 19th overall in the event, posting a top heave of 95 feet, 8 inches.
