While working on a new sewer main at North Elm and Prospect streets yesterday, L. F. Woodruff of Bridge Street, a plumber, narrowly escaped serious injury when a bank of rain-soaked red sand caved in upon him, burying him almost to the eyes.
Edward Poudrier, the young son of Mr. and Mrs. Alphonse Poudrier of Cross Hill, Florence, was struck by an automobile in front of the engine house Saturday evening. The boy was taken into Morrisseyโs barbershop and Dr. G. J. Hickey was called. The little fellow had a severe cut over the right eye and was badly bruised.
Preliminary review of proposed budget cuts for the University of Massachusetts shows that between 350 and 400 employees on the Amherst campus or about 10 percent of the state-authorized campus workforce could lose their jobs if the cuts are implemented by the state Legislature, according to State Rep. James Collins, D-Amherst.
Some 120 jobs at Northampton State Hospital would be eliminated if a 20 percent proposed state budget cut goes into effect, Department of Mental Health officials are predicting. Northampton State Hospital Asst. Supt. William Goggins said that the personnel cut would be devastating to services.
