Janet M. Hemminger of 20 Harrison Avenue has announced her candidacy for the School Committee member-at-large seat in the Democratic primary Sept. 23. In her statement, Mrs. Hemminger says, “It is essential that the best education Northampton can afford be available to all students.”

Princess Grace, the former movie actress who now lives in Monaco, was at Amherst College today with her son, who was being interviewed for possible admission as a student. The former actress was touring western Massachusetts with her son, visiting colleges. They were at Williams College yesterday.

The Northampton City Council Thursday approved a request to use $299,000 of this year’s school budget to cover an unexpected deficit in last year’s, but not before delivering a sharp rebuke to Superintendent Bruce E. Willard. City councilors upbraided Willard for allowing a nearly $300,000 debt to be racked up, but in the end unanimously voted to approve his request.

With a 7-2 vote Thursday night, the Northampton City Council passed a resolution asking the federal government to abandon its planned $60 billion Star Wars program and also urging nuclear powers around the world to dismantle their weapons.

The Northampton Community Arts Trust last week began renovation of its 33 Hawley St. building, paving the way for affordable practice, performance and exhibition space for generations to come. The nonprofit group was incorporated in 2010 with the intent of ensuring the viability of arts in downtown Northampton.

Strong fiscal management along with efforts to preserve and expand affordable housing and promote Amherst’s status as a green community have earned Town Manager John Musante high marks from the Select Board in a preliminary performance review.
