  • Mary T. McColgan, Ward 4 city councilor, announced today that she would be a candidate for re-election this fall. Mrs. McColgan was elected in March to fill the vacancy left by William P. Nagle Jr., who was elected last November as a state representative.
  • A project is under way at the St. Mary’s Church Rectory on Elm Street to repair and restore the exterior of the building, which was constructed in 1889. Sandblasting was completed yesterday. Pointing the bricks, waterproofing the exterior and repairing the gutters and downspouts are also part of the restoration.

  • Public works crews in the area are getting to work to combat mosquitoes by placing an anti-larval chemical in 8,000 storm drains in Northampton, Amherst and South Hadley after a dead crow in South Hadley was found to be carrying the West Nile virus. The Northampton Department of Public Works is set to place Altosid, an anti-larval chemical in the city’s 4,000 storm drains on Friday.
  • With the unanimous approval of the Planning Board, the pool building at Look Park, a favorite summer spot for leagues of city children until it closed in 1992, is set to be transformed into a banquet hall and community center. Planning Board members Thursday approved the estimated $1 million renovation project.

  • The sixty officers of the University of Massachusetts police department on Monday each received six hours of diversity training aimed to improve their interactions and avoid confrontations with people of all races on campus. The training was intended to teach police how to better respect those they serve, recognizing that a campus is not immune from the racial tensions that afflict American cities and towns.
  • In a turnabout, officials with the Cummington Fair want a controversial Williamsburg business to participate in the Hilltowns’ largest annual fair. The president and vice president of the Hillside Agricultural Society met Monday with the owner of CRD Metalworks to offer an apology for earlier withdrawing that invitation and to ask if business would return to the fair this year.
