  • Allen Weinstein, a professor of history at Smith College, picked up 725 pages of documents relating to the Rosenberg spy case in Washington, D.C., yesterday and said the action was an indication that “finally the FBI is serious about complying with Justice Department and court orders.”
  • Phillip L. Sullivan, 31, of 144 West St., today announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for councilor at large. Sullivan is the Democratic state committeeman for the Hampshire, Franklin, Hampden District, serving 42 cities and towns. Outgoing councilor-at-large Eugene H. Arnold has endorsed Sullivan in his bid for this office, Sullivan’s statement said.

  • More minorities and more women will compose the incoming class at Amherst College than ever before in the school’s history. According to statistics from Amherst College’s admissions office, this year’s freshman class will have slightly more women than men, 221 women to 217 men, for the first time ever.
  • The Smith College Parking Garage, a $5.6 million structure that will provide 352 parking spaces, is proceeding ahead of schedule, officials say. Its planned completion date is Dec. 1. The garage is meant for use by Smith faculty, staff, student and administrators, as well as the public during certain hours of the day.

  • An effort to move the former Little Red Schoolhouse building from Amherst College to an off-campus site may hinge on obtaining money from the town’s Community Preservation Act account. Committee Chairwoman Mary Streeter said the members are still at the discussion stage and getting answers from officials to a series of questions.
  • A long-running Forbes Library program that hand delivers books to homebound people will cease operations in September. The Forbes outreach program delivers books, videos and other materials to people who are confined to their home or who live at nursing facilities. Library Director Janet Moulding said money woes have forced the program to stop.
