The Belchertown boys and girls cross country teams each won its final home meet of the season, downing Greenfield in a 5K dual-meet at Chestnut Hill Community School on Wednesday afternoon.

The Orioles boys fluttered past the Green Wave with a 24-33 victory, while the score of the girls race wasn’t as close as Belchertown won, 15-50.

Greenfield’s Ryan Spofford took first place in the boys race in 17 minutes, 50 seconds, but the next three finishers were all Orioles. Cian Lindsay (18:03), Emmett Howard (18:14) and Ryan Toner (18:23) rounded out Belchertown’s top three runners.

Dylan Breiwick (18:39) and Alex Scotera (18:54) from the Green Wave joined Spofford as their top three runners in the defeat.

In the girls race, four of the first five finishers were Orioles, led by race winner Molly Mazzaferro, who posted a time of 22:38. Serena Jones (22:42) and Kylie Fitzgerald (23:29) came in behind Mazzaferro for Belchertown.

Greenfield only had three runners, but all three finished in the top 10.  Lauren Helie led with a fourth-place finish in 23:48, then Lillian Caron grabbed sixth in 25:23, before Lillianna Badillo earned 10th in 26:51.

PVCICS 21, Southwick 40 (boys) —
Oscar Schiff’s second-place finish guided the Raiders to the tri-meet win in Southwick. Schiff secured the runner-up spot in 16:50, trailing Dragons’ Grafton Tolopko’s winning time of 16:44. Schiff, Tolopko and Southwick’s Jacob Rokicki (16:59) all broke the course record.

By beating PVCICS, Hampshire locked up the Pioneer North league title with a 7-0 regular-season record.

The Raiders had the first five runners cross the finish line en route to their impressive victories.

Hampshire’s Brooke Hockenberry (20:33) and Ada Corner (20:37) were separated by just four seconds as the first and second-place finishers in the race.

The Raiders girls also remained undefeated following the win and took the league title.

Dragons head coach Kevin Brown (seventh season) earned his 150th career win too in the process.

The Warriors showed off their depth in the tri-meet victory.

Mohawk had four runners finish before the Red Hawks’ third runner, proving to be the difference in Wednesday’s close competition.

Evan Hedlund and Luke Howard were first and second overall as Frontier’s best runners (both had times of 15:07), but Peter Healy (15:15), Rex Kuoppala (15:17), Carson Richardson (15:45) and Aymeric Loucka (16:24) all raced well for the Warriors to snag the victory.

 The first eight finishers alternated between the Warriors and Red Hawks, but it was Mohawk which came out on top in the neck-and-neck meet.

Warriors’ Anya Read won the girls race in 17:31, while Frontier’s first finisher went to Louise Flagollet who came in second place with a time of 18:11.

Girls soccer

Northampton 5, Amherst 0 — Five different goalscorers found the back of the net for the Blue Devils as they pushed their point streak to six straight games.

Olivia Busone, Hattie Lewis, Rose Fallon, Zadie Silver and Olive Little scored for Northampton. All five goals occurred in the first 40 minutes against the Hurricanes.

Imanni Power-Greene needed just three saves to record the shutout for the Blue Devils (8-3-3). Annika Redington registered six saves for the Hurricanes (5-9), who finished out their regular season on Wednesday.

Longmeadow 2, South Hadley 0 — Tigers goalie Olivia Athas was shelled against the Lancers, totaling 15 saves in the loss.

South Hadley has one game remaining with a record of 7-7-1.

Hampshire 2, Belchertown 2 — Wednesday’s non-league game was the tale of two halves as the Raiders ran out to a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes, then the Orioles answered with two of their own in the second to force the draw.

Libby Puttick and Claire Pickard scored for Hampshire, while Lia Pikul and Alexa Karabestos tallied markers for Belchertown. Pickard and Karabestos also each had assists.

Karaghan Rogalski collected 12 saves in goal for the Raiders. The Orioles tandem of Linea Anderson and Ava Stelmokas totaled five saves.

Palmer 5, Holyoke 0 — The Purple Knights could not produce a goal for the second game in a row.

Goalie Kyleigh Luther had four saves for Holyoke, which surrendered four of the five goals in the second half of play.

Boys soccer

Smith Academy 3, Monson 3 — The Falcons showed a lot of fight in their tie with the Mustangs.

Monson scored in the second half to go ahead, 2-0, but a penalty-kick goal from Cajun Benson kickstarted Smith’s comeback.

Benson found the mesh twice in this one, while Matt Scagel obtained two helpers.

“Down 2-0 in the second half, we didn’t quit, kept defending and then attacked with purpose,” Falcons head coach Jason Duncan said. “Cajun and Matt may have done the scoring, but it was a team effort. Lots of guys made an impact today.”

Callan Payne was busy in net for Smith, making 11 saves in the draw.

Volleyball

Amherst 3, Belchertown 0 — Strong performances from Kiko Bhowmik and Rowan Albertson led the ‘Canes past the Orioles.

Bhowmik bashed eight kills (team high), three aces and nine digs (team high). Albertson attained seven kills, three aces and four digs. Rosalie Davis also distributed 13 assists as Amherst’s top passer in the victory.

The ‘Canes won by scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-11.

Olivia Skora (11 assists), Kaiya Cavanaugh (10 digs) and Layla Liminski (seven kills) turned in notable performances for Belchertown.

LATE TUESDAY RESULTS

Boys soccer

Holyoke 6, Ware 0 — The Purple Knights wrapped up their regular season with a shutout.

Xevier Davila starred for Holyoke with four points (two goals, two assists) while Nayan Tabin (goal, assist) and Christian Piedra (two goals) racked up points for the Purple Knights too.

Jaybriel Rivera-Soto made four saves for Holyoke in net.

“We possessed the ball very well and came alive about halfway through the first half and were able to tack on a few goals in the second half,” Purple Knights head coach Cameron Rivest said. “Hats off to their goalkeeper because he played a great game.”

Hopkins Academy 3, Greenfield 1 — Three unanswered goals from the Golden Hawks spoiled the Green Wave’s Senior Night at Veterans’ Memorial Field.

Jack Laurie put Greenfield ahead, 1-0, with a goal in the 17th minute, but Hopkins netted the next three, off strikes from James Anderson, Drew Crutch and Wyatt Soriano.

Matt Feltovic took the win for the Hawks with a six-save performance, while Green Wave goalie Liam Grahame-Lawson made seven saves in the loss.

Field hockey

Frontier 3, Greenfield 0 — The Red Hawks received a hat trick from Macy DeMaio to move to 10-3-2 on the season.

Kayden Viencek made 13 saves as the Green Wave’s goalie.

Cross Country

Mairead O’Neil set a new Northampton school record during last weekend’s MSTCA Bob Glennon Twilight Meet in East Falmouth.

O’Neil took third place in the girls varsity medium 5K race with a time of 17 minutes, 59 seconds. O’Neil became just the eighth runner in the state to break 18 minutes this season.

O’Neil led the Blue Devils to a fourth-place finish in the team competition as Northampton concluded with 141 points.

The Amherst boys and girls teams also showed well, taking second and third place, respectively, in each varsity race.

Calvin Miller ran to a second-place finish in 15:39 to pace the the Hurricanes’ boys squad, while Marit MacDonald led the Amherst girls, crossing the finish line in 19:44 for 18th place.
