- Sen. Henry M. “Scoop” Jackson, D-Washington, told a group of Hampshire County Democrats yesterday that “I feel at home in Massachusetts because I’ve struggled with your problems.” Jackson’s rambling, ad-libbed speech was politely but not enthusiastically received by 200 Democrats who attended the annual fundraising breakfast of the Hampshire County Democratic Committee.
- Main Street this morning was like the Great Plains in a blizzard. The snow blew so hard at times that it was easy to lose one’s sense of direction. Motorists made their cars creep, never knowing when they would be blinded by snow.

- Saying he’s the “right match” for Northampton, the School Committee voted 8-2 Wednesday night to hire Michael Cosgriff, assistant superintendent in Scituate, as Northampton’s next schools superintendent. If he accepts the job, Cosgriff, described as an energetic, “outside-the-box” thinker and agent of change, will succeed Bruce Willard, who is retiring after seven years in April.
- Two University of Massachusetts professors will join six other recipients of this year’s Commonwealth Awards, the state’s highest honors for contributions in the arts, humanities and sciences. Art professor Richard Yarde and geo-sciences professor Lynn Margulis, both of Amherst, were selected from about 150 nominations statewide.

- Bright colors and the sounds of multiple languages filled the Jackson Street School on Sunday afternoon as representatives of a host of local organizations held a dinner to welcome refugees and immigrants to the Valley. The school’s cafeteria was packed with immigrants, including a large contingent of Syrian refugees, and locals who wanted to extend a hand in welcome.
- The Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Massachusetts Amherst Isenberg School of Management has received the 2016 Outstanding Emerging Entrepreneurship Program Award from the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
