High school sports disturbance
Everything old is new again? I attended a large public high school in New Jersey in the 1970s. Fights between rival teams, while not commonplace, happened often enough that I remember them. At one particular away basketball game, the school bus carrying our team and cheerleaders was surrounded by the other schoolโs fans, who began rocking the bus. One of my friends was a cheerleader; she said it was terrifying as they were thrown out of their seats and against the windows, ceiling, and seat structures. At the end of the season, that school was kicked out of the league for not providing a safe environment for visiting teams. I donโt know if that was a fair consequence for the athletes and students not involved, but safety must be paramount.
I write this letter to remind folks that kids today are not worse than theyโve ever been. I donโt know about consequences, however.
