Easthampton, MA – Born: June 12, 1929 (Elmira, NY) – April 11, 2026. Childhood in Endicott, NY. Daughter of Nellie E Moss & Lawrence W Moss, who predeceased her.
Graduated: Union-Endicott High School in 1946. Attended & graduated from Cortland State Teachers College, with a BS Elementary Education June 1951. Mary was 1950 Homecoming Queen and a Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority member. She met Edward W M Travis at Cortland, and married June 27, 1953. Their adventures began on their honeymoon aboard the chartered sailboat ‘Stardust’. They were married 65 years until Edward’s death in 2018.
Mary taught for 40 years, most in fifth grade in Poughkeepsie, NY at Raymond Avenue Elementary School in Arlington Central School District. She attended SUNY New Paltz earning a Masters Degree in Education. Retiring in 1992.
In retirement, Mary and Ed would sail the Intercoastal Waterway to Florida. Their sailboat was moored in Old Saybrook, CT. Family and friends spent many summers cruising the Long Island Sound. Mary was a rug hooker and member of the Hudson Valley Rug Hooking Guild. Mary was a docent at the Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill historic site in Hyde Park, NY. Mary was an avid reader. Her other love was her family, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She spent the last four years close to family, at the Inn at Lathrop, Easthampton, Massachusetts. She was a constant in her children’s lives and she will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her children: Laura Travis, Deborah Travis, Mark Sustic, Diane Travis, Peter Weitzman, Eileen Travis, Edward L Travis, Rita Travis. Grandchildren: Nicole Travis, Devan Weitzman, Peter Hansen, Travis Weitzman, Joseph Ruane, Joanna Carber, Kylie Travis and Patrick Ruane. She was predeceased by her sisters Marguerite Barber and Jane Aikens, son-in-law Thomas J Ruane and grandson Thomas Sustic.

Funeral Mass: Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 775 Main Street, Poughkeepsie, NY April 18, 2026 at 10 am Burial: Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, NY.
