  • New traffic lights as well as sidewalk and road construction are part of the federal TOPICS program (Traffic Operations Program to Improve Capacity and Safety) in Northampton. Workmen are now installing a traffic light on the corner of Elm Street and Bedford Terrace.
  • The Hampshire County Bicentennial Ball on June 12 is sold out. It will be sponsored by the First Battalion, 104th Infantry, at the Florence Armory. The ball will be the night before the Hampshire County Bicentennial Parade in Northampton.

  • A curious vehicle parked on Main Street Friday morning was brewing coffee with energy from the sun. The van with solar panels was promoting Bart’s Homemade’s new line of organic beans purchased directly from farmers in South America.
  • School officials expect to come up with a list of three to five finalists for the new principal of JFK Middle School by Monday, according to Associate Superintendent Donna Harlan. The new principal will replace Richard Carnes, who retires this summer after 41 years in the Northampton school system.

  • Motorists should expect delays along Conz Street beginning Friday as a state road reconstruction project involving a new roundabout gets underway. The work involves constructing a roundabout at Conz and Pleasant streets, as well as new sidewalks, the relocation and replacement of gas and water lines and new streetlights.
  • Former Smith College President Carol T. Christ has been named interim executive vice chancellor and provost of the University of California at Berkeley, effective Sunday. Christ, the 10th president of Smith College from 2002 until June 2013, will replace Claude Steele who announced his resignation from UC-Berkeley April 15.
