- An early morning trash fire that may have been set by four youths shut down Easthampton High School today. The fire, rung in by a teacher at 6:55 a.m., was in a ground floor trash and storage room that was locked from the outside.
- Donald A. Pabst, assistant of the hospital director, Veterans Administration Hospital, the Bronx, N.Y., has been named director of the local VA hospital. He will assume his duties on May 24.

- The Pascommuck Trust has purchased 41 acres of farmland adjoining the Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary, providing a greenway from the Manhan River to Arcadia, which is a Massachusetts Audubon Society preserve. The trust bought the property for about $420,000.
- A $1 million transformation from an old pool building at Look Park into a modern banquet hall will be completed this summer but plans for wedding receptions and the like will have to wait until a court decides on a lawsuit challenging the facility. A neighbor filed the suit, claiming the project violates the city s zoning laws because, as a for-profit enterprise, the facility s activities are not permitted in the urban residential zone where the park is located.

- The Northampton Community Preservation Committee has recommended that the City Council allocate local funding to restore two of the First Churches stained-glass windows. The proposed $213,000 is to repair the Tiffany window that faces Center Street, and the rose window that faces Main Street.
- Ward 3 City Councilor Ryan O’Donnell announced Monday that he will seek the at-large council seat that was vacated when Jesse Adams resigned last week. Adams announced Friday that he was resigning from the at-large seat that he held since 2009, citing the demands of his work as a lawyer.
