- Francis A. Sheehan of 46 Allison St. was elected yesterday as state deputy of the Massachusetts State Council of the Knights of Columbus. Sheehan will be the top state officer in the Knights of Columbus next year.
- Northampton’s “meter maids” are organizing their own union — both of them. Parking Supervisor Irene Gustavis notes that if ratified, the collective bargaining unit will consist of herself and Bernice Powers.

- The death last Friday of a female swan that nested at the Oxbow has galvanized neighborhood residents, who have banded together to offer a reward for information leading to the killer’s arrest. For six years, the swan and its mate had been returning to the Oxbow in the spring.
- Fifty volunteer tutors were honored last week for their dedication and service to immigrants and refugees who study English for Speakers of Other Languages, or ESOL. The volunteers tutor students registered in the International Language Institute’s free English program. The institute has provided the tutor program since 1990.

- Little will need to change at local public schools following a nationwide directive urging schools to strengthen support for transgender students issued by the U.S. Justice and Education departments Friday. According to Northampton Public Schools Superintendent John Provost, Massachusetts is a national leader when it comes to supporting transgender students in public schools.
- Two more people have pulled papers for the vacant at-large City Council seat: former School Committee member Blue DuVal and attorney Marlene A. Morin. Meantime, Mary “Mimi” Odgers said Monday that she has decided not to pursue her candidacy for the seat any further.
