The Belchertown boys volleyball team ran into a buzzsaw in the Western Mass. Class B final, falling to Longmeadow, 3-0, at Chicopee Comp on Friday.

The Orioles entered as the No. 3 seed, but could not slow down the top-seeded Lancers, losing each set by an average of six points. Set scores came in at 19-25, 17-25 and 17-25.

Senior Shea MacLean did well, all things considered, mashing a team-high 10 kills, while Arda Cayan (23 assists) and Dara Mao (11 digs) helped Belchertown stay in it as long as possible.

The Orioles likely secured a bid into the MIAA Division 2 state tournament, regardless of Friday’s loss, as they were above the top 32 cutline prior to the result in the championship.

Hoosac 15, Hopkins 3 — The Golden Hawks weren’t able to solve the undefeated Warriors, dropping their semifinal bout on the road.

Hopkins will qualify for the MIAA Div. 5 state tournament as a top 32 squad.
