  • Eight doctors who allege that they have been denied access to practice at The Cooley Dickinson Hospital are suing the hospital for $500,000. The obstetricians and gynecologists who provide services to the Amherst Medical Associates allege that they and their patients have been “substantially injured” by the refusal of the hospital to consider the doctors for staff positions.
  • Easthampton farmer Robert C. Underwood failed to obtain enough signatures to get on the ballot this fall as a Republican candidate against Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. Underwood said today that he did not know how many signatures his campaign fell short of the 10,000 required by law, but he said that he will stop his campaign.

  • George D. Nolan was recently hired to manage Cooley Dickinson Hospital’s Facilities Department, an in-hospital crew of 30 employees. On-going projects at CDH include a three-part renovation to the CDH Rehabilitation Services (Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy) Department, as well as major renovations to the Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound Departments.
  • Family and friends will gather from all points of the country today to honor the memory of the 25 men who lost their lives when their plane crashed into Mount Tom in July 1946. The ceremony marks the five-year anniversary for the memorial, said Dorothy Warm-Stettner, sister of the late Alfred Warm, one of the 24 Coast Guard sailors aboard the plane.

  • A new restaurant is set to open in Northampton this month with the goal of contributing to a cuisine specific to the Pioneer Valley. The restaurant, sevenstrong, will be located at 7 Strong Ave., where Ibiza Tapas shuttered at the end of June. Save a few necessities like salt, sugar and oil, owners say all of its ingredients will be drawn from the Pioneer Valley.
  • Northampton residents will head to the polls Thursday for the first round of votes to determine a new at-large city councilor. Blue DuVal, Ryan O’Donnell, Marlene A. Morin and Andrew B. Smith are the four candidates vying for the at-large seat vacated by Jesse Adams.
