- The Pier, a seafood restaurant seating 96 people, opened today at 8 King St., the site of the former Godfather’s restaurant. Owned by Mr. and Mrs. Chester M. Puchalski and Kathleen Robinson, the menu of the restaurant includes several beef items, in addition to seafood. The owners of the Pier all worked previously at Jack August’s restaurant.
- Ground was broken yesterday afternoon for the relocation of Mathias Duda’s marina off the Connecticut River Oxbow. Duda, who is presently operating the Ox-Bow Marina off Old Springfield Road, is relocating his marina to a man-made lagoon off the Oxbow at the end of Island Road. The new marina will be called Island Marina.

- The popular quasi-Mexican eatery Cha Cha Cha plans to expand downward, creating a basement space where 45 to 55 patrons can dine on food from a new menu. The owner of the 132 Main St. cafeteria-service restaurant, Unmi Abkin, has applied to extend the seasonal wine and malt license to the new premises.
- The Arts in Education Center hopes to raise another $550,000 by October so it can break ground this fall for a $10 million building on Mill Valley Road in Hadley. Construction is expected to start next spring, a year later than initially planned.

- Two veteran police officers have been promoted to sergeant in Hadley, bolstering the Police Department’s supervisory ranks. Officers Douglas Costa and Kenneth Hartwright were sworn into office at the Select Board’s July 20 meeting, bringing the number of sergeants to three in the Hadley Police Department.
- Nicole LaChapelle’s voice quavered with emotion Tuesday night, moments after the delegate cast her roll-call vote to nominate Hillary Clinton for president at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. The historic vote made Clinton the first woman to lead a major political party in the United States.
