- Despite residents’ protests over the choice of a house on South Main Street in Haydenville for a group home for emotionally disturbed teenagers, neighbors say they are adopting a “wait and see” attitude while the residents move in this week. One neighbor said that she hopes her fears are groundless but added she and her husband may move from the street where they have lived for the past 45 years if the teenagers create problems in the neighborhood.
- Smith’s Vocational High School will no longer have separate classes for men and women, beginning in September. Academic classes, such as English and math, have been virtually segregated by sex because most women students were in the vocational schoolÕs home economic program. Students in home economics had separate academic classes from students in the rest of the school.

- A plan to build seven two-family homes on 4.2 acres off Bridge Road was held up by the Planning Board Thursday night after neighbors of the proposed cluster development sounded off against the project. After listening to nearly two hours of discussion, the board voted to postpone a decision.
- Efforts to find those responsible for the death of a female swan on the Oxbow in May will get a boost in the coming weeks as organizers plan to post wanted posters and take out newspaper advertisements seeking information. A reward fund for information leading to the arrest and conviction in the slaying of the swan has reached approximately $6,000.

- One of the region’s largest human service agencies is merging with an emergency shelter and housing provider in Springfield in a move designed to strengthen services for clients at both organizations. The boards of directors of Clinical & Support Options Inc. in Northampton and Friends of the Homeless Inc. in Springfield each voted to pursue the merger.
- The excavator’s claw dug into the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center on Atwood Drive on Tuesday and continued Wednesday as part of a process that will see the building replaced with new businesses. The hotel, part of the Hampshire Hospitality Group, closed in November.
